A planning application for a new Scout and Guide headquarters in Ben Rhydding has been submitted to Bradford Council.

Ben Rhydding Scout and Guides Group is seeking permission to demolish its ageing timber-framed building in Wheatley Lane and build a new meeting place with up-to-date facilities.

The group has been doing its own fundraising and has already secured thousands of pounds from organisations including the Sir George Martin Trust and Ilkley Parish Council.

The target determination date for the plan is November 1.

The proposed replacement building, if it gets the go-ahead, will replicate the footprint of the current building but provide an additional 60 square metres of floor area. The planned building would include activity halls, kitchen, meeting rooms, stores area and toilets.

In a letter to supporters and parents, the group said the existing HQ, close to the Ben Rhydding rail bridge, was showing its age.

It has structural problems and a leaking roof, as well as inadequate toilet and kitchen facilities.

A design-and-access statement accompanying the planning application said: “The overall appearance of the proposed building is that of the traditional ‘hut’ building and is in sympathy with the surrounding area.

“The proposed building will be clad in treated shiplap timber, matching the existing building.”

The driveway leading to a car park at the rear would be kept and reinstated as required after the new building is constructed, says the statement.

Level access to the new building is proposed.

Ben Rhydding Scout and Guides Group secured a £5,000 grant from the Sir George Martin Trust for the project and Ilkley Parish Council recently agreed to contribute £10,000 towards the cost of building the headquarters.

The group has also had £7,500 promised by Ilkley and District Round Table towards the cost of fitting out the new kitchen facilities.

Its own fundraising efforts have included inviting donations from local people and setting up a ‘Wall of Honour’ to record the support of any individual or business supporters who make a significant donation.
