Councillors are concerned about a decision to raise the speed limit in the airport tunnel on the A658.

Leeds City Council has approved plans to increase the limit from 30mph to 40 mph.

Otley and Yeadon councillor Colin Campbell said he and his fellow ward councillors Ryk Downes and Sandy Lay were concerned about the increase.

“We have some concerns about this and have repeated our earlier comments that traffic already travels too fast on Victoria Avenue and we are particularly worried that simply putting up a sign will not slow southbound vehicles,” he said.

“We have asked for other measures to be put in place at the southern end of the tunnel to physically slow traffic and if appropriate restrict the use of the second lane.”

A report to the Chief Officer Highways and Transportation in August said there had been one objection to the alterations being proposed for the A658.

The report says: “It is a misconception that increasing the speed limit along a length of road will automatically make it less safe. Setting the limit at a level that better reflects the character of the road should make the road safer and allow for better compliance along the adjacent lengths where there is more justification for a lower limit, because the lower limit signs, in this case 30 mph, will be placed at a more conspicuous and obvious location creating a gateway effect to the change in road environment.”
