Residents are expected to join councillors in opposing another bid by Asda to extend opening hours at its Otley store.

The supermarket had conditions to limit opening hours attached to the planning approval that let it open on Cross Green, at the former Netto site, in 2011.

But it is now asking for permission to open from 6am to midnight, Monday to Saturday, and for any six hours between 10am and 5pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Councillor Colin Campbell (Lib Dem, Otley & Yeadon) said he would be opposing the change, as he has done with previous attempts, because of the likley disturbance it would cause.

He said: “I would oppose the proposal because of its effect on neighbouring residents.

“When the store originally opened the Plans Panel agreed a number of conditions to protect the amenity of neighbouring properties.

“In particular, they were concerned that noise and late-night traffic movements from the store.

“Since Asda took over the building they have attempted on a number of occasions to extend their hours of opening which Leeds City Council have resisted. I would hope they will do so again.

“This store is in a residential area and noise and nuisance from late night shopping should not be allowed to disturb residents’ sleep.”

Asda was criticised for trading half an hour earlier than had been agreed - from 8am instead of 8.30am - just weeks after it opened in Otley.

The company then tried to apply retrospectively for different hours, but was slammed by Coun Campbell at the time for “riding roughshod over the feelings of local residents”.
