More than 100 people took part in the final public session of the summer season held at Ilkley Lido last Saturday.
The Dip and Dunk event, organised by the Friends of Ilkley Lido (Foil) in partnership with Bradford Council, attracted local families, keen outdoor swimmers and many lido fans both from Ilkley and further afield. All were treated by the friends group to delicious home-made cakes and free cups of tea.
"We were delighted with the number and variety of people who came along" said Davy Simpson, membership secretary for Foil. “We had been a little worried that as it had turned cooler last week we would not get that many showing up. As it turned out the weather was kind to us and we found that lots of people wanted to make the most of this last chance to swim, take a dip and spend a few relaxing hours at the lido.”
Among those taking part in the event were Sarah Williams and her two children Ruth, aged ten and David, eight. “I have swum a length and it’s cold but fun,” said Ruth.
Lido regular and Foil member Jean Marc Trouille, pictured enjoying a well-earned slice of cake, used the opportunity to add to his amazing swimming record. During this season he has swum twice the distance of the English Channel in the lido – a total of 1,575 lengths. “I have done them all without a wetsuit. As I am a typical Frenchman with a love of rich food and good wine, it is a great way for me to stay in shape!” said Jean Marc.
