Schools across Wharfedale are set to be affected by next week’s industrial action.

Otley’s secondary, Prince Henry’s Grammar School, will be closed to most pupils and only open to year 12 or year 13 students, who are being advised to use the day for private study if they want to use the facilities.

In a letter to parents, head teacher Janet Sheriff said: “You may already be aware that NASUWT and NUT union members are being called to take one-day strike action by their unions on October 1.

“NASUWT and NUT members at school are keen to point out that any action they take will in no way be a reflection on their commitment to Prince Henry’s Grammar School and they stress that the issues are with Government policy at a national level.

“Although the exact numbers of teachers who intend to strike is not known, the high proportion of staff who are members of these two unions means that it is not possible to open school for all our students on this day.”

Ilkley Grammar is expected to be another casualty of the strikes, closing all day on Tuesday as many staff at the Cowpasture Road school are members of the two unions taking action. Parents were due to be informed of the closure yesterday.

A school spokesman said: “We will be closed on Tuesday due to strike action because of the high numbers of teachers in the two unions.”

St Mary’s School, Menston, has confirmed it is expected to be closed to pupils on Tuesday. The school, on Bradford Road, advised parents to check the school website if they required day-off clarification.

The picture with the area’s primary schools at the time of going to press was more mixed.

Otley All Saints Primary, for example, will be open on Tuesday, except for year three and nursery, while Ashfield Primary will be closed, apart from early years, reception and year two. St Joseph’s in Otley was still finalising its plans, while Westgate Primary and Pool-in-Wharfedale Primary confirmed they would be open as normal.
