Anyone who has ever toyed with the idea of becoming a barbershop singer is about to be given the chance – with a free six-week course.

The Learn to Sing in Harmony course will take place in Rawdon and is open to men of all ages.

It is being run by the Leeds and Bradford Barbershop Harmony Club in the 40th anniversary year of the British Association of Barbershop Singers.

Anyone recruited will have the chance to take part in the national chorus convention at the Harrogate International Centre next May, along with at least 40 other groups.

Steve Smith, chairman of the singers who are based at the Rawdon and Guiseley Conservative Club, said they were hoping to take advantage of the current vogue for choir singing to recruit new members.

“Singing in harmony brings huge musical pleasure as well as all sorts of health benefits which derive from good breathing and the sheer buzz of making music,” he said.

“We are seeking men of all ages who may have sung when they were younger and got out of the habit or who just want to learn to sing well in tune.

“Just about everyone can sing. Our course will help you discover your voice and gain confidence. Don’t worry if you are self-conscious, most people are a little nervous at first.”
