The final play of the season, Honour, opens on Monday, July 8 in the Wildman Studio. Honor and George have been happily married for thirty-two years and as in many good marriages, they have made compromises along the way. While George forged his career as a writer, Honor left a promising literary career of her own and dived into motherhood – with no regrets. Their world seems unshakeable until young and tenacious Claudia arrives on the scene and disrupts the equilibrium of their seemingly perfect lives. In this play Joanna Murray-Smith subtly cracks open the complexities of a modern relationship from every angle, laying bare our capacity to love, hurt and deceive those around us. Honour tells this affecting tale of thoughtless conceit from the perspective of the three women involved: the wife, the lover and the daughter. The play was first performed at the Playbox Theatre in Melbourne Australia. It received its UK premiere at the National Theatre in February 2003. Murray-Smith is one of Australia’s best known contemporary playwrights. She won the Victorian Premier’s literary prize for drama twice and was awarded a Commonwealth Medal for Services to Playwriting in 2000. She says of the play “I wanted to put centre stage a middle-aged woman who has willingly sacrificed her life for marriage and is abandoned at the very point where she should be reaping the rewards of that devotion. It’s a poignant place to be”. The play runs until Saturday, July 13.
