Christian Aid looks to Ilkley people

THE Christian Aid Group in Ilkley is once again organising a house-to-house collection during Christian Aid Week - which this year runs from May 11 to 17 - urging Ilkley's residents to give generously.

Last year, the town donated more than £8,000 to the work of the charity, which supports hundreds of projects run by local partners in countries all around the world.

Recently, the group heard from Steph Cooper, who works in the regional office and who had been out to visit projects supported by Christian Aid in both Guatemala and India. There she had been able to see at first hand the difference which donations can make.

She said: "In the communities I visited, the people want to move forward, and they are prepared to take any small opportunity offered to them. They don't expect handouts and are really grateful for help they do receive.

"Also, those who do manage to succeed in something seem to then want to put something back into their community, rather than to keep their bounty to themselves. It also showed me that fair trade and development aid can, and do, make a positive difference to people's lives."

The familiar red envelopes will be dropping through doors starting this weekend but if, for some reason, people do not receive one and would like to make a donation, they can contact the group co-ordinator on Tel: 01943 604407.
