A GROUP set up to continue the legacy of a young Otley woman’s “kindness, compassion and community service” is already having a positive effect in the local area.

The Sarah Jackson Community Wish (SJCW) was set up in January by the family of Sarah, who died in August last year following a sudden and catastrophic brain bleed.

The mission of the organisation is to support and uplift the Otley community through acts of kindness, charitable giving and community engagement.

A spokesperson for SJCW said: "Sarah Jackson was more than just a member of the Otley community; she touched the lives of those around her with her warmth and generosity.

“In her memory, the SJCW has been created to carry forward her legacy, ensuring that her light continues to shine brightly in Otley for years to come.

“Whether it's supporting individuals, families, or organisations in need, the SJCW stands ready to lend a helping hand and give a little love.”

The SJCW is initially serving as a platform for individuals participating in sponsored events to donate their proceeds to charitable causes in Sarah's memory.

As the initiative evolves, the community will have the opportunity to nominate deserving beneficiaries, with selections made by the dedicated trustees of the SJCW.

Since its inception, the Sarah Jackson Community Wish has wasted no time in making a meaningful impact on the Otley community. From delivering Easter eggs and over £300 of essential items to the Otley Larder, fish and chips to the Otley Action for Older People Lunch Clubs and £600 of funds to replace vital equipment for Public Access Defibrillators in the town, the SJCW has already touched many lives.

One notable contribution includes a donation of over £1000 to the Otley Bereavement Group, covering their rent for a year.

The spokesperson added: “This gesture, close to the hearts of all SJCW trustees, demonstrates the profound impact the initiative seeks to make in supporting those struggling with grief.

“Looking ahead, the SJCW has ambitious plans to expand its reach and impact through ongoing fundraising efforts and community events.

“The upcoming Otley Carnival Day on June 15 holds special significance as the SJCW and family will lead the parade in honour of Sarah's contributions as the Stars Co-ordinator on the Otley Carnival Committee.”

The Carnival Stars programme, now renamed Sarah’s Carnival Stars, will continue to inspire local school children to engage with their community through volunteering, furthering Sarah’s legacy of community involvement.

The spokesperson said: "The Sarah Jackson Community Wish is more than just a charitable initiative; it is a testament to the enduring spirit of community and the power of compassion to make a difference in the lives of others. As the SJCW continues to grow and evolve, the legacy of Sarah Jackson will continue to shine bright in the Otley community.”

Many people are already throwing their weight behind the SJCW, including Amie Jordan, a friend of Sarah, who ran the London Marathon last month.

Kylie Armitage, Sarah's sister-in-law, ran last weekend’s Rob Burrows Marathon. A group of friends of Sarah and her family including Nick Brown, Tom O'Donnell, Jonny Mac, Mark Killgallon, Chris Hill, Scott Evans, and Paul Nicholson aka Otley’s Finest, not only took on Rob Burrow Marathon but also the Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge the very next day.
